The Miniaturist follows 18 year-old Nella Oortman as she journeys to 1686 Amsterdam to meet her new husband Johannes Brandt. Nella is so excited to become an adult and have her own family and household. But when she arrives in Amsterdam to find her husband isn't even there to greet her she starts to wonder if this will be the happy fruitful marriage she had hoped for. Her husband gifts her a dollhouse cabinet that is a replica of her own home so Nella hires an elusive person name the miniaturist to furnish her gift but when the miniatures start to replicate the misfortunes happening in her private life she starts to wonder who this miniaturist is and how they know so much about her.
I have to say I fell in love with the setting of this book more than anything else. It really made me wish I could visit Amsterdam. The writing and descriptions were beautiful but I felt that the plot was not fleshed out as much as it could have been and some of the twists were pretty predictable while others were just plain disappointing. I also really didn't connect with the characters at all. Which made it all the harder to sympathize with them when anything bad would happen to them. Although this was Jessie Burton's debut novel so I would love to pick up a more recent book by her and see how her writing has progressed. Nevertheless I think its an interesting read and if you have the time go ahead and pick it up.
The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton gets 3 out of 5 stars
